Originally chartered on the 25th day of January in the year 1926, Troop 1 Carmel was sponsored by "A Group of Citizens of Carmel". Our original Scout Master was Stanley Cornish. attached below is what is believed to be our original charter and if this isn't it than our troop is even older than we believe.
Scouts typically cross over from Cub Scouts into Scouts BSA in the spring of 5th grade. In Troop 1, it is not unheard of to recruit older boys with no scouting experience. Additionally, we enjoy higher than average older scout retention, with many of these young men remaining on as Assistant Scoutmasters.
Patrols
Scout Patrols:
New Scout Patrol is comprised of scouts who have recently crossed over to Troop 1 from Cub Scouting. These scouts remain together until we return for the fall Scouting Season, at which time our newest scouts will be integrated into our Regular Patrols.
Regular Patrols comprise the main body of our troop. This is where the boots hit the ground, a scouts success in scouting is directly related to the effectiveness of their patrol and the individual scouts commitment to his patrol. All patrols elect their leaders in September and March. Numbered 1 – 5, each patrol has a unique name, emblem, flag and cheer. Scouts in Regular Patrols are typically in grades 6 – 9
Venturing Patrol, are older scouts who may or may not hold a Position of Responsibility. Their primary focus is to support the efforts of the Senior Patrol and High Adventure. The Venturing Patrol is comprised of scouts in 11th and 12th grade.
Senior Patrol, is the leadership of our troop. It is their responsibility to plan our annual calendar, set an example, promote participation on outings, attend all SPLC meetings and run our weekly Troop Meetings. Members of the Senior Patrol are typically in grades 9 – 12.
Adult Patrols:
Knights, young men who have aged out of Boy Scouts, yet remain on as Assistant Scoutmasters or Committee Members. Their focus is networking with each other to promote their participation on troop or scouting events or simply to stay in touch. The primary focus of the Knights is High Adventure and to provide support to our Venturing Patrol.
Maximus, are the uniformed parents of actively registered scouts. The Maximus Patrol sets an example in both out troop meetings as well as in the outdoors. Any parent who joins us on a campout automatically becomes an honorary member of the Maximus. For more information see “An adult patrol Maximus” on our web-site http://carmel1.mytroop.us/system/files/An_Adult_Patrol_Maximus_413.pdf
Purple Power Patrol, is comprised of uniformed mothers of registered scouts who wish to foster comradeship, participation and scouting sprit with other like minded mothers. The Purple Power Patrol sets an example during our troop meetings as well as in the outdoors. Any mother who joins us on a campout is invited to do so as an honorary member of the Purple Power Patrol.
Old Goats, are registered uniformed adults whose sons have aged out of our troop. The Old Goat Patrol provides continuity and is our connection to the past. As is often the case without the support and labors of the Old Goat Patrol we would be hard pressed to provide the quality program we now enjoy. Any non-uniformed registered adult who meets the Old Goat criteria and joins us on any event automatically becomes an honorary member of the Old Goats.
Camping Gear
Troop 1 Carmel has an ambitious camping program which is intended to provide opportunity for scouts who are new to camping as well as challenging treks for our more experienced and capable scouts. Below is an overview of these different styles of camping and the equipment we provide, followed by a list of personal gear which individuals are responsible for:
Cabin Camping / Events: Troop 1 has an inventory of kitchen tools, condiments and paper goods essential for cooking and eating indoors as well as BBQ’s. Additionally we have an event grill, a large 3 burner stove and a collapsible Colman kitchen organizer. This equipment is utilized primarily for cabin camping, the CCC, our Sled Ski trip and in the DUMC kitchen while preparing our Family Dinner, the Scout Sunday Brunch, the Autumn Breakfast Fundraiser and the Memorial Day Family Campout. An inventory of these items is kept on file and is updated regularly.
Patrol Camping: Troop 1 subscribes to the Patrol Method. Patrols are ideally comprised of to 6 – 8 scouts who meet regularly in at DUMC. Additionally each patrol plans for their participation on outings; cooking, tenting, other related duties, learning and having fun together is their primary concern. To support this concept each patrol has been uniformly equipped with the following items:
- Tents & site: 3-four man tents (ideally 2 or 3 scouts+ gear per tent), 1-20’ x 20’ tarp, 1 LPG lantern.
- Cooking: 1-two burner LPG stove w/wire rack, 1-5gal beverage dispenser, 1-20qt cooler (food), 1-cooking utensil box, 1 condiment box, 3 color coded 5 gal KP buckets, 1 cutting board, 2 frying pans, 1-6qt pot, 1-12qt pot (for KP water).

High Adventure Treks: Treks represent a variety of opportunities which range from paddling over placid waters in the Adirondacks to backpacking in New Mexico. A Trek is comprised of: the destination, the itinerary and the crew. Crews are comprised of 2 or more registered / trained adults and 6 - 10 scouts (crew size is often restricted by local ordinance to a maximum of 8 members). All crew members must be fully equipped with essential personal gear, poses a completed valid BSA Class III Medical at time of trek and be physically fit. Scouts must be a minimum of 13, sometimes 14 years of age at the time of the trek. To support treks we have established two High Adventure Caches, each with the following items:
- Sleeping & site: 3 lightweight two man tents, 1 lightweight three man tent, 1-10’ x 10’ dining fly, 3 bear bags w/rope & carabiners, 6 bear canisters, , TP & trowel, sun block and 1 First Aid kit
